Big day for Apple Fans

Today is the long awaited release day for the iPhone 3G, as well as the day when MobileMe finally shows up and is accessible (while some were able to get to it yesterday, I was not amongst them). It’s also supposedly the release date for the iPhone 2.0 software update release, though an unofficial leaked version was available early yesterday. A few brave souls decided to take the plunge and install the unofficial version - I’m not that daring, especially with a major update like this. And of course, the much anticipated App Store is now officially online as well.
I’m going to hold off on the iPhone 3G for a little while, mostly to see what people’s initial thoughts are. While I do find myself leaning towards the bleeding edge of technology, I tend to not be a first adopter on things that cost me money. I am content to let others try it first, then allowing me to make a better informed decision on whether to purchase or to wait until it’s more refined and bugs have been worked out.
Aside from the iPhone 3G launch, today also marks the day where MobileMe - Apple’s refreshed and re-branded update to .Mac - makes it’s full debut. Initially Apple had planned on a 6 hour window to transition .mac over to MobileMe, however that turned into a protracted (almost 24 hour) window of the service going up and down. As with many initial deployments I’ve taken part in (with Proxito, Bouncepad and DeftMobile) it would appear that MobileMe didn’t go nearly as planned. From the brief glimps I’ve managed to get between it going up and down, I’m liking what I have seen. It has, however, been running incredibly slowly for me - something I’m sure can be attributed to it’s initial launch and the issues faced as a result. I’m looking forward to better stability and speed over the next few days.
The App Store seems pretty cool from what I’ve seen thus far. I checked it out last night and pulled down a few free Apps, and one pay app (Twitteriffic Premium), and am really looking forward to the new apps that will be available from the store over the next few weeks/months. Very cool!
And lastly, the iPhone software update to 2.0. I’ve not had a chance to “take the plunge”, and have not even had a chance to verify that it’s even available yet . I look forward to the update and all the goodies that come along with it, and will post my thoughts on it once I’ve “taken the plunge”.
All in all, though - it’s a big day for Apple fans, very exciting
[update 10:22] - it would appear as though the iTunes activation servers are dead to the world. Commenters at TUAW are reporting that phones being updated at the moment are being bricked (permenantly or temporarily I don’t know) due to the inability to access the servers. One would think that Apple would have properly planned for this event, but it appears they’re having a lot of issues right now. I am glad my plan to wait to upgrade / update was well worth it!
